Outside The (Card) Box

A major trend among weddings is to turn that rather boring card box into something amazing.  Whether renting from us or using your DIY skills – here are some ideas to help liven up an entrance table. Here are 5 fresh ideas for you to get creative with your card boxes.

1. Lanterns – Place an empty lantern on your a welcome table for guests to drop their cards in or have individual ones at each table.

2. Vintage Suitcases – We just love old suitcases, especially when they are used as wedding decor. The best part is they require hardly any effort – all you need to do is add a burlap sign. We have those too!

3. Crates –  It is almost overwhelming the different ways that you can use crates in your wedding decor. They are just perfect for holding cards and smaller gifts.

4. Birdcages – This is one of our most popular decor rentals. Birdcages come in all shapes and sizes, adding that perfect a hint of elegance to any wedding.

Sara: High School Graduation Portrait Shoot

As I was on this photo shoot with Sara and her mom, it occurred to me at one point that I didn’t think she was even born when I graduated high school (turns out she was almost 2, then I felt a bit better)!  I had never done an actual senior portrait shoot before, so when Sara called me up back in April, I was really excited to try it out!  I’d been wanting to try a shoot with some vintage furniture, so I got the chair from Details Vintage Decor Rentals and lugged it around the legislature grounds.  I think it was worth it!  Sara, you looked beautiful and I hope your grad was everything you wanted it to be!  Good luck on the months and years to come – you’ve got a bright, sparkly future ahead of you! 🙂

dreaming of all sorts of classy vintage details for your wedding, but dreading the thought of trawling thrift shops and yard sales to find what you want?  not to worry – katie and kira of Details Vintage Decor Rentals have already done the leg work! their unique collection of curated vintage and vintage-inspired wedding and event decor pieces is a one-stop-shop for stylish couples looking for both one or two statement pieces or an entire decor overhaul. we’re pleased to introduce you to the lovely ladies behind Details Vintage Decor Rentals – enjoy!

katie and kira

tell us a bit about the duo behind Details, and what made you choose this creative path?

Details Vintage Decor Rentals began last year after katie and kira were planning a wedding for their mutual friend. the girls had a very hard time bringing their friends’ wedding dreams to life – as they had a hard time sourcing vintage decor in edmonton. this niche became a passion for kira and katie as they realized the combination of their talents, experience and an opportunity in the market aligned perfectly for a new venture.

katie is the marketing guru of the duo.  She has been tweeting, liking, posting, advertising, event planning, graphic designing, blogging, pinning, fundraising, hashtagging, and web designing for the past 10 years.  with a marketing diploma from NAIT and a bachelor of management from concordia, katie’s expertise helped to launch Details Vintage Decor Rentals into the edmonton wedding industry.

kira has always loved everything to do with designing and decorating beautiful spaces.  as a teen, she thought it was fun to collect paint chips and wallpaper samples, building her “kit,” painting and repainting her bedroom furniture and walls, and finding a new DIY project that challenged her to learn new skills. as an adult, kira executes her passion with an education from the university of alberta residential interiors program.

what are some of your favourite pieces in your collection? what is rented the most frequently? any items that are particularly unusual or noteworthy?

oddly enough, our favourite pieces are not the most frequently rented. we are absolutely in love with our black Underwood typewriter, aptly named ‘frank’ (House of Cards reference). the typewriter is a gorgeous show piece for any welcome table. In fact we frequently make up “notes” in typewriter font for our brides to place inside the typewriter.

another great piece is our BAR marquee sign. we both wanted to add a marquee sign to our collection, however all the signs we found on etsy were too expensive or not what we envisioned. katie and her father spend a couple of days designing and building this sign. it has been quite popular, and we are sure it will continue to be rented as word about the sign gets out.

on the furniture side, Rosie and Dolly, our ‘his and her’ tufted chairs, are a popular choice for couples. the chairs have been used for everything from signing tables at the ceremony to welcome tables at the reception. one couple even used Rosie and Dolly for their sweetheart table at their dinner. we also love our Singer sewing machine as a guest book table – it adds so much character.

our most frequently rented pieces would be our whiskey barrels. we currently have six barrels in stock, with most brides renting two and our rustic barnwood table top or antique door. they’re very popular for dessert tablescapes or used solo as a cake table.

yeg love! – what are your top three fave things to do in edmonton?

– drinking cold wine on a patio, whether it be whyte avenue or jasper. there is something about patios in edmonton during the summer that make us really happy…

– eating ice cream at menchie’s

– festivals, festivals, festivals. whether it be Taste of Edmonton, Art Walk, or Fringe, we love getting out and seeing what edmonton has to offer.
